Milky
Way is my
painting series that I started in 2015. I classify various
objects from
my surroundings into categories based on shapes from human
body parts
such as limb, joint, bone, face, tube and hole. It is
presented as a
classification chart style in which all the objects classified
under
the same shape appear homogenously as if they are
interchangeable with
our body parts. The idea came from the great east Japan earthquake and tsunami in 2011 which became a starting point for me to reflect on our relationship with our environment. It ultimately led me to be interested in human bodies as a place where nature and culture meet. I imagine a topological shape when perceiving our bodies. The inside and outside of a body are connected without boundaries and all the elements, that construct our environment, circulate in and out regardless our will. Thus, each one of our bodies inevitably contains conflicts, contradictions and sometimes harmonies between nature and culture. This series is an experiment of embodying this metaphysical concept by looking at our bodies as a part of nature and our environment as an extension of our body. |
