Future Primitive is my painting series that has been
simultaneously developed together with my sculpture series
Primitive Future. This series starts with sketching abandoned objects that I find on the street of Harlem, NY where I’m currently living. Those objects include furniture, baby toys, sports equipment, and daily commodities and they remind me of my hometown, Kochi, a small city in Japan, in the 90’s when Japan’s economy slumped. I was surrounded by many things that look like existing in the gray area between human territory and the surrounding nature, such as ivy covered houses, postponed construction sites, empty lots where people threw trash. In the sketches, I extract elements that look like organic out of the found objects and re-assemble them into plant-like shapes. Unlike sculpture series, drawing allows me to deform the shapes and add colors and textures. When finally painting them on canvas, the objects connote fragments of my memory and suggest an existence beyond time and space. |
